General Information

The JCU Rock Climbing Club provides the people of Townsville with the opportunity to climb and meet other climbers. We welcome all members of the community (students & non-students) and all levels of experience. Membership is $30 AUD/6months for Students and you must first join the Student Association to become a member. Non Students may also join and the fee for non students is $100 AUD/yr. Membership covers all the gear necessary to climb, and once you have paid, you only need to give a gold coin donation for petrol (unless you are driving) for each trip you attend.

Beginner climbers need not worry as we will show you everything you need to know from belaying techniques to climbing techniques. We have all of the gear required for climbing including ropes, a full rack, shoes, harnesses, helmets, bouldering mats…the works, so no need to purchase expensive equipment unless you really want to. You can pay your $30 membership fee on the first trip/event that you attend. There are also regular indoor climbing club sessions at local climbing gyms.

For those who are interested in getting more involved with rock climbing, there are courses available through a local training organisation in Top Rope Climbing, Vertical Rescue, Lead Climbing, and Leadership Training. These courses are not compulsory, however those of you who would like to use club gear for your own climbing trips must hold at least a top rope certification.

Please see our FAQ section for some frequently asked questions. If you still have questions after that, please send us an e-mail at jcu.rockclimbing@gmail.com

Cheers!
