Upcoming Courses

Hi Climbers,

Is anyone interested in doing either a Top Rope Climbing course or a Vertical Rescue Course? Here is a bit of information about each course:

Top Rope Course:
The top-rope climbing course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to locate a suitable climbing route (using a guide-book), rig a solid and reliable anchor system, operate a belay system and then climb the route using a range of climbing techniques. Training also covers selection and use of equipment, abseiling skills and climbing safety calls. Training is designed to be realistic and customised to suit your particular needs. An added bonus to doing this course is being able to borrow JCURCC gear to go climbing on your own!
  • Duration = 2 days nominal may vary according to individual aptitude)
  • Cost = Based on number of people booked. JCU students receive a 10% discount on final price (i.e. if we get 8 people on a course, each person w/ a valid JCU student ID will only have to pay $276.30).

  • Enrolment Requirements = Must be at least 15 years of age, Speak, read and understand the English language (unless accompanied by a skilled translator), Fit and healthy for climbing (requires flexibility & agility)
  • Location = Mount Stuart
  • Equipment = Please contact your trainer direct to discuss your equipment requirements.
  • Qualification = Statement of attainment that is nationally accredited. These units can be used as partial completion of SRO050203 Diploma Outdoor Recreation. This course is designed for participation in recreational top-rope climbing.
  • Training units = SROCLN001A: Demonstrate simple climbing skills on natural surfaces, SROCLN002A: Apply climbing skills on natural surfaces, SROCLN003A: Establish belays for climbing on natural surfaces
Vertical Rescue Course:
The vertical-rescue course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to deal with emergencies that could occur within the context of outdoor recreational activities at height. Training covers anchor systems, approach to the casualty, vertical mobility, evacuating a casualty to safe ground, plus a range of specialist units to adapt the course to your needs. Training is designed to be realistic and customised to suit your particular situation.
  • Duration = 4 days nominal (may vary according to individual aptitude) -- 3 days if you have recently completed the Top Rope Course
  • Cost = Per person depending on number of people booked. Again, students receive a 10% discount ( i.e. if a total of 8 people sign up, JCU students will pay $414.90 for the course)

  • Location = Mt. Stuart

  • Qualification = Statement of attainment that is nationally accredited. These units can be used as partial completion of SRO050203 Diploma Outdoor Recreation. This course is designed for participation in a vertical rescue.
  • Training units = SROOPS001B: Implement minimal environmental impact practices, SROOPS002B: Plan for minimal environmental impact, SROODR001A: Apply basic outdoor recreational logistics, SROODR002A: Plan outdoor recreation activities, SROODR003A: Plan outdoor recreation activities (advanced), SROABN001A: Demonstrate simple abseiling skills on natural surfaces, SROABN002A: Safeguard an abseiler using a single rope belay system, SROABN003A: Apply single pitch abseiling skills on natural surfaces, SROABN004A: Establish ropes for single pitch abseiling on natural surfaces, SROCLN003A: Establish belays for climbing on natural surfaces, SROVTR001A: Perform vertical rescues, SROVTR002A: Perform complex vertical rescues, SRXEMR002A: Coordinate emergency response
